Local and professional service businesses
Your customers search, choose within a day, and judge you on a site they see for a few seconds. Having one is no longer the differentiator. Having a good one is.
Covered here
- Professional services
- Local businesses
- Service based businesses
What you need, that a generalist does not produce
- 01
A site that survives the first few seconds
Because the most common reason a local business loses an enquiry online is that the site looked out of date, not that it was hard to find.
- 02
Local search set up for same day intent
Structured around searches that end in a visit or a call that day rather than around traffic that never converts.
- 03
Paid campaigns priced against the published benchmarks
So the cost per click and cost per lead you are quoted can be compared with what your category actually costs.
The evidence
83 percent of small businesses in the United States now have a website, up from 64 percent in 2018, from a survey of 406 owners in August 2025. Of the 17 percent without one, only 16 percent name cost as the reason. Most say a website is not relevant to their industry.
75 percent of consumers surveyed say they have abandoned an online purchase because the website looked outdated or unprofessional, from a survey of 500 consumers in September 2024.
Local search decides fast: 76 percent of people searching for something near them visit a business within a day, and 88 percent of smartphone local searchers visit a related business within a week.
Published Google Ads benchmarks for the categories on this page, from a rolling analysis of more than 16,000 United States campaigns. Home and home improvement: 7.85 to 8.33 dollars per click, around 91 dollars per lead. Attorneys and legal services, the most expensive category tracked: 8.58 to 9.87 dollars per click, 131.63 dollars per lead. Business services: 5.58 to 5.87 dollars per click, 93.69 to 103.54 dollars per lead.
No primary source publishes what share of contractors specifically have a professional website, and we looked. There is no figure for it on this page.
A Northvex client is often on both sides of this at once: the contractor who sends us a bid set to price is very often the same contractor who needs the website and the Google Ads account that brings the next bid invitation in.
