Division 05 / Delivered
Division 05 structural steel estimating and detailing
On structural steel the tonnage is rarely the mistake. The connections are. They are the largest single omission on this division and they are the part the drawings show least.
What we measure, and in what units
- TON structural steel by shape
- EA connections by type
- SF metal deck
- LF handrail and guardrail
- EA stairs and landings
- SF grating
- LF lintels
What the deliverable looks like for this division
Members by shape and length from the framing plans and schedules, converted to tonnage. Connections counted by type from the details and the connection schedule. Deck, rails, stairs and miscellaneous metals on their own lines because the specification often leaves them floating between divisions.
Scope items routinely missed on this division
Only someone who has priced the work knows what falls through the gaps. No competitor publishes this list.
- Connection material and labour, frequently the largest single omission on the division.
- Base plates, anchor rods and templates.
- Shop primer against galvanising against field paint, which are three different scopes.
- Miscellaneous metals, which the specification often leaves floating between divisions.
- Embeds supplied under 05 and set under 03, and who carries which.
- Camber, and what it means for fabrication.
- Bolts, with high strength assemblies as a distinct item.
- Erection crane time and site access.
- Special inspection where the specification assigns it.
Documents needed to price it
- Structural drawings and framing plans
- Connection details and schedules
- The steel specification
- Any engineer’s connection design criteria
Questions people in this trade actually ask
Are connections priced from the design drawings or from detailing?
From the design drawings at bid stage, by type and count against the details and the connection schedule, with the design criteria noted. Detailing refines them after award; it does not create them.
How is tonnage derived when a shape is not scheduled?
From the member size on the framing plan and the length measured, then the published weight per foot for that shape. Where a size is missing it is flagged, not assumed.
What happens on a rejection or resubmittal?
Comments are addressed item by item, changes are clouded and recorded in the revision table, and the resubmittal shows what changed so the reviewer is not re reading a package already approved.
